5 Star Readers’ Favorite Book Review
Flock of Cranes by Kelley Likes is a children’s book that asks the question, “What will you find at the zoo today?” It’s an interactive book where young readers are invited to explore and spot all kinds of cranes, some that are real birds and some that are machines. Children get to count the cranes and see all the different types of cranes they can spot, from blue cranes and hooded cranes to black, red, and grey-crowned cranes, to white-nape cranes. Readers will also learn some interesting crane facts along the way, answer open-ended questions, pay attention to details, and celebrate curiosity. They are invited to look closely, and they may be pleasantly surprised at what they find.
Kelley Likes did a magnificent job of writing Flock of Cranes. What made it so effective was the inventive approach to learning about cranes and the comparison and play style of learning. Ninnani’s illustrations with the soft, watercolor scenes showed the contrast between the different cranes and the angular machinery that mimicked the cranes. I also loved that the author added fun facts at the end to further enhance young readers' engagement and enjoyment. Another smart touch to make it even more interactive was the incorporation of the crane origami activity, complete with instructions. The author was very thoughtful in how she put this story together. Readers who enjoyed similar picture books like Red is Best by Kathy Stinson or Hervé Tullet’s Press Here will love Flock of Cranes.

Behind the Story

While on a once-in-a-lifetime 30-year anniversary trip to Vienna, Austria, I noticed all the beautiful machine cranes around the city. I remembered how I would always say to my children, as we drove past construction sites with cranes, “Look at the flock of cranes.”
I thought, what if I wrote a story about bird cranes and machine cranes, showcasing a few similarities between them?? Like a blue crane bird and a blue machine crane.
I came up with a cute concept and then reached out to the amazing artist Ninnani. As a co-creative director, they took the story to a whole new level. They came up with the idea of two children looking through spyglasses, and that worked perfectly along the original idea and contributed to visually shaping the story. Their out-of-this-world watercolor images will have you falling in love with bird and machine cranes.
